It probably doesn't come as a surprise that productivity in the workplace increases when employees feel physically comfortable.
Sitting "ergonomically correct" can boost energy levels, increase general well-being, and prevent work-related injuries. In this blog, we'll discuss the staples of the ergonomic office.
What is "Ergonomics?"
Ergonomics is the science of arranging things workers use so that they can perform work more efficiently and safely. The focus is on human factors and our interactions with equipment and objects in the workplace. Anything labeled "ergonomic," is designed to enhance comfort and therefore the productivity of the user.
Focus areas
1. Chair:
Each section of the chair should be adjustable (seat height, back height, armrests, and lumbar support.) There needs to be adequate lumbar support and cushion. As a bonus, go for breathable fabric!
2. Desk:
Each employee's desk's height should allow the forearms to be parallel to the ground when typing. Anything higher or lower than the forearm can cause the employee to experience back, shoulder, and neck pain.
3. Computer Monitor
The position of computer monitors should be level, just below eye level, and should be no more than an arm's length away. The neck should not be tilted too high or too low, which can cause neck discomfort.
4. Mouse and Keyboard
The mouse should remain close to the keyboard, this helps to reduce wrist pains. The keyboard should be placed directly in front of the employee and positioned slightly under elbow height.
Posture
Encourage your employees to pay close attention to their posture as they're working. It's very easy to begin slouching while typing a long email; then the next thing you know, your back and neck feel like they're on fire! We don't want that for our employees, so here's some tips you can relay to yours:
The feet should be flat on the floor with knees at a 90-degree angle.
The back should be straight (lumbar support assists with this!)
The shoulders should remain relaxed.
Do you think productivity could be increased in your workplace with proper ergonomics?
Yes!
Doesn't really make a difference.
